The Best Essential Oils for Better Sleep
If you like to indulge in a bit of aromatherapy, then this may be the way to go if you are struggling to get a good night’s sleep.
Popular and widely used, essential oils can be a great aid in helping you to relax, unwind and promote better quality sleep.
I’ve chosen some of my favourite essential oils to help promote sleep and relaxation:
My top 5 best essential oils for better sleep:
Lavender: an absolute must-have; lavender is one of the most commonly used essential oils for relaxation. Lavender is popular for its calming effects, soothing smell, and dreamy qualities, which can aid in relieving stress and anxiety.
Ylang-Ylang: from a flower comes this sweet smell, which has relaxing qualities to help you rest. While not as powerful a sedative as others on this list, it is still a worthy addition to assist in calming the mind. If the smell is a bit much, try pairing it with lavender, which to its credit dominates as a scent.
Bergamot: unlike the floral sweetness of the first two, bergamot is fresh, citrusy and uplifting. Add one or two drops to a diffuser to help reduce stress and promote feelings of well-being.
Valerian: recognised as a sedating essential oil, the smell might not be up to everyone’s taste, which can work against it. However, pair this with some other essential oils to match your preferred taste so you can experience its qualities for yourself.
Chamomile: Often used in teas, chamomile is known for its sedative qualities and can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. It’s a must-have for those wanting better sleep.
How to use essential oils:
Depending on preference, you may opt to use a diffuser or add a few drops to your pillow. I recommend that you become familiar with the smell of the oil beforehand, so as not to go overboard on something you may not like!
If you like baths, you can also add a few drops of oil to warm water before getting in. Some essential oils can also be applied directly to the skin, such as to pulse points. It is good practice to check first whether you can apply the essential oil directly to your skin.
Some essential oils need mixing with a carrier oil, such as jojoba, sweet almond, coconut etc.
If you have sensitive skin or are otherwise unsure, check instructions as advised or speak to a health professional first.
However you choose to use your essential oils, just enjoy. Try and throw in some relaxing music or do the opposite and allow for some silent time.
Either way, I hope you enjoy trying what works best for you. Regarding experimenting, don’t be shy to try new things. As they say, different folks, different strokes!
